Malcolm Taylor - Transport Manager

How long have you worked at Double H?

4 years

Could you tell me what your typical day involves?

Planning the day to day running of goods-in, the despatch of the finished product, arranging all transport, controlling of equipment and liasing with all other departments. This is done for all 3 sites.

What kind of training have you had at Double H?

The first piece of training was when I first started. This involved spending time on the nursery to see how plants were grown, looked after and made ready for despatch. I have also had training on fork lifts, computers, fire safety and specific courses to learn about other areas of the business.

Do you have any stories which particularly stick in your mind, from working here?

There are many, but the one that comes to mind was the anthrax scare after the September 11th horror. A container of baskets had arrived and was being unloaded as normal. As the last box was unloaded, Martin opened it up and was a bit shocked to see a package containing white powder. With the current scare of anthrax on the front page of every newspaper he retreated rather hastily ….. At which time, Howard walks into the loading bay. Martin eagerly points out to Howard what he as just seen and raises his concern, looking for some guidance and leadership. Howard in turn rises to the occasion. He walks over, sticks his finger in the powder and tastes some with the comment, "I think it's chalk." What more can you say.

What major changes have you seen since you have worked here?

Since starting with Double H I have seen new systems installed, better leadership, a pro-active attitude and a willingness to succeed surrounded by a dedicated team. What more could you ask for.

At the end of the day, what do you do to forget about work?

In ways, it's quite easy to forget about work as we are very fortunate to live in a lovely part of the country. I will often go down to the Quay with my family, buy some drinks and watch the sun set over Christchurch Harbour. Failing that, there is always the New Forest to walk in or even Bournemouth for a lively night out. But more often than not, I'll get home open a bottle of wine and chill out in the garden.
