Why do we need to make this change?
In the long term fossil fuels that we currently use to run our business will run out... or become so scarce that their use will have to be prioritised elsewhere.
Wood - particularly reclaimed wood, is a sustainable and efficient source of fuel and we believe that it is our responsibility to change the fuel source we use NOW.
It’s not just Double H that believe in Biomass Combined Heat and Power (CHP)... Here’s what some other organisations say:
- Friends of the Earth - East Dorset
“East Dorset Friends of the Earth have no hesitation in supporting the principles of this proposal... The power generation process is on a small scale providing renewable energy direct to the Nursery with any surplus feeding to the National Grid via an existing sub-station. It will use a waste material collected from the local area that is unsuitable for re-use or recycling, this is consistent with the Proximity principle.
It is important that sustainable solutions such as this are encouraged if we are to reduce the negative impacts of climate change and meet the challenges of peak oil.”
- The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Sustainable Business Partnership
“The installation of this Biomass CHP unit will not only hugely reduce their carbon emissions through energy efficiency, but will make a significant reduction in waste wood going to landfill in Hampshire. We fully support the project”.
- Department of Energy and Climate Change
“Biomass has the potential to make a valuable contribution in heat and power generation”.
- Greenpeace
“Because CHP is the most efficient way possible to use biomass fuels, it cuts emissions and reduces fuel dependency immediately”.
What happens next - The Planning Process:
- We are actively consulting with neighbours and other interested organisations in the area.
- We will be doing this so that by the time we submit our planning application we will have had the opportunity to take as many views as possible into account.
- We will be doing a detailed assessment on traffic and emissions and any other significant environmental impact as part of our application.
- This consultation should be completed by the autumn when we will be able formally to submit our planning application.
- This will be followed by detailed technical design, and a submission of an application to the Environment Agency for permits to operate the biomass CHP plant.
